Breezy, quiet evenings call for runs at the park

…where the next headquarters is looming in the background.

I’ve been back to running again, on top of working out at the gym on a regular basis. But since I want to run longer distances than my current 10, I figured I needed to spend more time on track and not just on the treadmill.

Sunday evenings are the perfect time to strap on my runners and go to nearby Ayala Triangle where the usual crowd is absent and the amount of fumes from vehicles isn’t so terrible; I still prefer, taking the pathways within the park, however.

I could afford to skip the first set of tonight’s Roland Garros men’s final between Nadal and Djokovic. In fact, I could skip it altogether.

I anticipate your needs*

Sandbar Boracay

Can this day be any better? After having my brunch at nearby Bamboo Lounge, I decided to rent a beach chair and got very lucky to find one available at The Sandbar for only 100 pesos for a day’s use. Unfortunately, there was no available beach umbrella, so the attendant manning the place moved my rented chair in the shade and promised to get me one once it became available.
While I was out in the water, he found me an umbrella and immediately set it up beside my chair. I don’t normally get this kind of service anywhere else, as a lot of attendants merely pay lip service when they tell you they would do something for you. Say, it’s a way for them to dismiss you.

When I was reading under the shade of my umbrella, he offered water spritzer to keep my skin hydrated. I didn’t realize that even under the shade and wearing sunscreen at SPF 100, the noontime sun could still be terribly harmful. So after spritzing cold water on my arms and legs, he left the spritzer with me, but not before making sure that its contents were kept cool by placing the bottle in a bucket of ice.
Twice during the rest of the afternoon, he moved my umbrella to make sure I was in the shade properly and replaced the ice bucket to keep my water spray cool. Having the kind man around also meant there was someone to keep an eye on my beach bag, book and gadgets whenever I had to take a dip in the water,  and he did.
That was just excellent service unlike any other that I encountered anywhere, especially the pricey joints in Makati. I didn’t have to ask him for more assistance yet he was kind enough to offer them, and so I couldn’t be more glad to give him a good tip when I left.
Sadly, I failed to ask for the Kuya‘s name. But if ever you feel like lounging by the beach on Station 1 in Boracay, choose Sandbar and look for the middle-aged gentleman who usually sits by the juice stand beside Bamboo Lounge. He will keep a good eye on your belongings and make sure you are comfortable. Don’t forget to give him a fat tip.

Getting Physical on VD

Fitness First RSC

Who knew that the gym would still have a considerable number of people on a Valentines night? As my “consultant” (new marketing speak for Account Manager) quipped, belong na belong tayo!

Even after a number of years of not going out on Valentines, flexing one’s muscles and burning calories at a nearby fitness club is a novelty, and that’s a welcome thought. I have just renewed my personal fitness package, thankful that I could use my rebate as discount for the next round of sessions with my trainer. So far, I have lost roughly 4% of body fat and increased muscle mass; am running at a faster pace; lifting weights that would have injured me before I started on the regimen; dancing 20 minutes monstop;  started on BodyCombat; and best of all, trimmed 3 inches off my waistline.
I totally fit into my old jeans and skirts again. No Spanx needed, haha! And i’m just getting started.
Happy VD.

Nike We Run Manila 10K 2011

I ran my first 10K last Saturday at the Nike Run Manila 10K event held at Bonifacio Global City. I didn’t have as much fun as I had in the previous two runs that I joined, and it wasn’t due to the longer distance that I had to finish. I wish it was as organized as both Rexona and Unilab since all running events were staged by Run Rio.

For one, there should have been lighting fixtures installed along the race route, as there were few stretches that were in nearly total darkness and one had to use a torch or a phone’s flashlight app to see the track. Claiming baggage was a total mess, and it took me nearly an hour after the race to get back my bag, afraid that it might end up with someone else and along with it some precious possessions.

On the plus side, I like the running shirt that Nike provided. I wish, however, that the finisher’s kit would be really distributed by the sponsor. Joining the event wasn’t cheap, so to make fees really sulit, getting the finisher’s kit would be really nice.

A mini-rock concert was held after the race, featuring Parokya ni Edgar, Chicosci, and some other band, but  we were all too tired, aching and famished, so instead of watching, we proceeded to Seafood Island at nearby Market! Market! for a huge meal.

UPDATE: More than two weeks after the run, I still have to receive my finisher’s kit from either Nike or its organizer.

Scenes from Run United 2 2011

I joined my second 5k run with the Unilab-sponsored Run United 2 at the Bonifacio Global City last Sunday.  The event was grander than the recently held Rexona Adventure Run, with more runners participating and lots of fun games and loot stalls set up at the venue, I believe. Our gun time was 5:50 AM, and I guess I managed to finish earlier this time.

Here are some photos that I took of us lining up at the many booths that were set up around the venue. Suffice it to say, our P650 joining fee was well worth the fun, singlet, and loot bags that contained medicine samples, vitamins, energy drinks, supplements, tumblers, juice and chocolate powder, Globe Tattoo sun visor, and a tube of Myra-e tinted moisturizer.

The best way to end a fun Sunday morning: pigging out on seafood and loads of rice.
